Below you can find a brief overview of the key functions and responsibilities of the different teams at DRI:
Digital Democracy
The Digital Democracy team focuses on leveraging digital technologies to enhance democratic processes and institutions. We conduct practical research about online political discourse (e.g. harmful content online, mis-/disinformation and hate speech) and we monitor new technologies for their impact on democratic processes. Using actionable evidence and insights, we initiate policy debates, contribute to the digital policy agenda and hold tech companies and governments accountable against self-regulation and legal obligations. We also support public interest research of disinformation and hate speech globally, by providing social media training to civil society organizations. Our team consists of researchers with skills to analyze social media data, legal experts and grant coordinators.
Europe
In Europe, DRI works across the EU and Eastern Partnership countries, with occasional collaborations also in the Western Balkan and Central Asia regions. Thematically, our work centers primarily on the five key topics of strengthening the rule of law, ensuring public participation, protecting digital discourse, reducing polarization, and supporting democratic innovation.
Monitoring, Evaluation, Learning (MEL)
MEL is a cross-cutting function embedded throughout DRI, ensuring that our work remains evidence-based, impact-driven, and aligned with strategic objectives. MEL operates at two levels:
- Organizational-level MEL – Strengthens institutional learning, measures impact across programs, and aligns MEL practices with strategic priorities.
- Project-level MEL – Develops project log frames, conducts evaluations, tracks project outcomes, and refines methodologies to improve impact.
MEL is an integral part of program design, implementation, and evaluation, requiring collaboration with all teams to support evidence-based decision-making.
CommunicationsThe communications team shapes DRI’s public image, amplifies its mission, and engages key audiences by delivering its research and activities in a compelling way. It produces content, crafts engaging narratives, manages media relations, and ensures brand consistency.
Through clear messaging, the unit supports DRI’s goal of becoming a leading voice in democracy support. Its day-to-day work ranges from guiding a designer on the layout of a report and engaging journalists to share expert insights to drafting social media posts and creating visibility materials for events. All of it is done in close collaboration with colleagues in other units.
Finance
The Finance Team is responsible for the financial management of all projects, ensuring compliance with internal policies and donor regulations. In coordination with the Program Unit and Country Offices, we oversee budgets from proposal design to project closure and audit. Our responsibilities include:
- Budget monitoring and financial reporting, including interim and final reports
- Processing payments and managing financial transactions
- Preparing budget amendments and payment requests
We ensure financial accountability and transparency, supporting the organization's sustainability.
HR and Administration
The HR and Administration team is committed to fostering an inclusive, efficient, and well-structured work environment. We handle:
- Recruitment, employee relations, contract administration, and staff development
- Payroll, benefits management, and compliance with policies and regulations
- Office management, procurement, and travel coordination
Our goal is to empower our colleagues and create a supportive workplace that enables them to thrive and contribute to DRI’s mission.
